Outdoor Adventures Rental Program

Outdoor Adventures offers a wide range of outdoor gear available for rent to help the Duke community explore the outdoors. No membership is required to rent equipment, but individuals with a Duke Rec & PE Membership are eligible for discounted rates. See information below on how to reserve equipment!

Equipment rentals are open to anyone in the Duke Community, including students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Duke Rec & P.E. members receive a discount on equipment rentals.

Equipment Rental Policies

 

Please read and understand the following policies to ensure that your rental process runs smoothly.

  • Duke University assumes no responsibility for accidents or injuries resulting from the use of rented equipment.
  • The renter will incur additional charges if the equipment is returned wet, dirty or damaged. If the equipment is lost or damaged beyond repair, the full retail value of the item and shipping costs will be charged to the renter.
  • Renters will be charged the 1-3 day rental rate for each item not returned between 1-3 days. After 3 days, the renter will be charged the 4-7 day rental rate for each item (in addition to the 1-3 day late fee). This will continue until the gear is returned. However, if the equipment is not returned within three weeks of the scheduled due date, the renter will be charged full retail value of the item and shipping costs.
  • Any additional fees due to the rental center must be paid within two weeks of the date the renter is notified. The renter’s university account will be charged if payment is not made prior to the end of the semester.
  • The group contact person must be a Duke student or faculty/staff and will assume full responsibility for all equipment rented. It will be the responsibility of the group contact person to pay any repair, replacement or late fees.

Equipment Reservation Requests

 

Equipment can be reserved using our online equipment reservation request form. Please submit rental requests at least 3 full business days prior to the desired pickup date.  You will receive an email confirmation when your rental request has been accepted.

Here are a few things to consider for your individual rental:

  • Pricing is based on the rental period, not per day.
  • Our staff need individual requests 3 business days in advance to prepare gear.
  • We accept debit/credit card or check. We cannot accept Flex.
  • Due to damaged and lost equipment, we do not rent to KVille or Graduate Student Campout.  

Duke-Affiliated Organization Equipment Requests

Here are a few things to consider for your rental:

  • All organizational equipment rental requests are subject to availability. Requests are not confirmed until they have been reviewed. Official confirmation and pickup instructions will be sent once all information has been verified. 
  • Organizational rentals typically require additional advance notice. Please submit rental requests at least 2 weeks prior to the desired pickup date.
  • Pricing for Duke affiliated organizations is by the week, not per day.

Looking to rent the climbing wall?

The climbing wall can be rented for groups using our online climbing wall rental request form. Please submit rental requests at least 4 weeks prior to the desired rental date. You will receive an email confirmation when your rental request has been accepted! 

Here are a few things to consider for your climbing wall rental

  • Climbing wall rentals are not available when the climbing wall is open, or programming is happening.
    • Fall/Spring Semester Climbing Wall Hours
      • Monday-Thursday: 5-10pm
      • Friday: 3-8pm
      • Sunday: 11:15am-5:45pm
    • Summer Semester Climbing Wall Hours
      • Monday-Thursday: 5:30-8:30pm
  • Staffing for climbing wall rentals is dependent on staff availability and the number of Duke Certified belayers in your group. Staffing numbers will be assessed once the request is received.
  • Requests need to be submitted 4 weeks in advance of the desired rental date.

Group rental prices include

  • Private access to the Climbing Wall and dedicated staff members
  • Equipment, including harnesses, climbing shoes, and belay devices
  • Basic climbing instruction and belay assistance
  • The option to rent a classroom space, depending on availability

Standard rental

  • $200/hour
  • Minimum 1 hour
  • Maximum of 25 people
  • Duke OA staff will belay
  • No prior climbing experience necessary

Instructional rental

  • $250/hour
  • Minimum of 2 hours rental time
  • Maximum of 18 people
  • No prior climbing experience is necessary
  • 1.5 hours of instruction and 30 minutes of open climbing
  • Designed for groups that want to learn belaying techniques together
  • Individuals can come back to the climbing wall 24 hours after the belay class to test out

Free Equipment Check-Out

Rec & P.E. Members have access to a wide range of standard aquatic, fitness and sport equipment while visiting the recreation centers. These items are free of charge but must be returned prior to the end of your visit to avoid additional charges. To check out one of the items below, present your ID to the Front Desk or Weight Room Desk of either facility, or the equipment will be provided within the program space.

Ask for these items while on the pool deck at either Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion or Brodie Aquatics Center:

The equipment in Wilson’s Group Fitness closet, located between the two multipurpose rooms, is available for Members to use. The equipment can only be used inside the multipurpose rooms and is not permitted to leave those designated spaces. Please wipe down and return all equipment to its proper places. If equipment is damaged, please report it to the front desk. Listed below are some of the available equipment.
