Duke Rec & P.E. is an American Red Cross teaching facility. American Red Cross Lifeguard and First Aid/CPR/AED courses are designed to teach participants the skills and knowledge to prevent, recognize, and respond to various types of emergencies until emergency medical services take over.

Lifeguard Certification

The American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course is designed to teach participants the skills and knowledge to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatics emergencies. The Lifeguard Certification includes First Aid/CPR/AED, and is valid for 2 years.

Eligibility

Individuals ages 15+ by the last day of the course are eligible to be certified. Current Duke students/Rec & P.E. Members and Non-Members are able to participate. 

Pre-Requisites

Interested participants must first pass a swimming skill evaluation conducted on the first day of class consisting of the following:

  • Swim 300 yards continuously using freestyle or breaststroke
  • Retrieve a 10-pound object from 7-10ft of water, surface, and swim 20 yards using just their legs
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using just their legs

Lifeguard Re-Certification

Eligibility

Participants interested in a Lifeguard Re-Certification must provide proof that they either:

  • Hold a valid or current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
  • Hold a American Red Cross Lifeguarding/CPR/AED/First Aid Certification that is not more then 30 days past expiration

Individuals ages 15+ by the last day of the course are eligible to be certified. Current Duke students/Rec & P.E. Members and Non-Members are able to participate.

First Aid/CPR/AED

American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED courses are designed to teach participants the skills and knowledge to prevent, recognize, and respond to emergencies. Upon completion, participants will learn how to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services take over. First Aid/CPR/AED certification is valid for 2 years.

Eligibility

Individuals ages 15+ by the last day of the course are eligible to be certified. Current Duke students/Rec & P.E. Members and or Non-Members are able to participate.
