Director of Aquatics

A member of the Duke Athletics staff since July 2022, Megan Melgaard serves as the Director of Aquatics and Risk Management for Duke Recreation and Physical Education. In this position, Megan provides management and oversight of two aquatics facilities, Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion and Brodie Aquatic Center, and is responsible for developing and implementing risk management planning and initiatives for the Duke Recreation and P.E. department.

Megan grew up in Mission Viejo, CA, and began swimming in a Mommy and Me class at the age of 6 months old. Continuing through high school and college, Melgaard was awarded Maryland State Swimmer of the Year in high school and became a 5-time All-American and US National Champion at the University of Florida, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science and Masters in Decision Information Science from the UF Warrington College of Business.

Following a successful competitive swimming career at the University of Florida and as a member of the United States National Swim Team, Melgaard began specializing in open water swimming, triathlon, and adventure sports. She earned three Masters Swimming World Championship titles, won the GA State Cyclocross Championships, completed an Ironman, and was inducted into the Maryland Swimming Hall of Fame in 2019.

With a focus on aquatics, events, and safety, Melgaard has garnered unique experiences around the world as an athlete, coach, aquatics director, event director, and water safety subject matter expert. She appeared in the film, The Guardian, about the U.S. Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer Program alongside Kevin Costner, worked as a safety diver for the Discovery Channel, and was a Location Scout for water-based commercials and films. Megan has written for magazines such as Outside, Men’s Health, and Triathlete, and most recently served as Director of Events, Safety, and Risk Management for Swim Across America, a national organization that hosts charity swims to fund cancer research and clinical trials.

Melgaard is passionate about creating safe, inclusive environments by providing opportunities that support all levels of interest. In her free time, Megan enjoys teaching swim lessons, adventuring with her dog, and spending time with friends and family.
