Janelle Fernandez grew up in Bernville, PA and has always had a passion for service, volunteerism, and supporting others in health and wellness. Janelle earned her BS in Sport Management at East Stroudsburg University and went on to study at James Madison University, where she earned a MS degree in Sport and Recreation Leadership with a concentration in Campus Recreation. It was through these experiences that Janelle established her career goals and found purpose in pursuing a career in the field of campus recreation.

It was through her experience as a Disney College Program Intern where Janelle cemented her professional mission of “creating magic for guests”, which she has carried into every aspect of her professional career. After college, Janelle went on to serve as the Coordinator of Members Services at the University of South Carolina before joining Duke Recreation & Physical Education in January of 2022. As Coordinator of Facilities and Member Services at Duke, she provides exceptional customer service to Recreation Center Members and the Duke Community.

Janelle is an avid runner, having completed 5 half marathons, as well as the Walt Disney World Marathon in 2017. Her passion for exercise, wellbeing, and mindfulness creates harmony between her profession and life outside of work where she takes every opportunity to spend time on the coast paddleboarding and exploring lighthouses. Janelle believes that customer service is key in recruiting, engaging, and motivating others to find the magic within everyone’s wellness journey.
