Outdoor Trips

The outdoor trips and workshops program offers a wide variety of land and water-based activities for the backcountry novice, the avid explorer, and everyone in between.


  • Registration for Fall 2019 trips will open on Monday, August 26.
  • To get more information or to register for Outdoor Adventures trips please come in person to the Climbing Wall in Wilson Recreation Center.
  • Full trip registration fee is due at the time of registration.
  • Payments accepted include cash, check, credit or FLEX.

Wondering how you are going to spend your Friday evening? Like Sunsets and Paddling? This is the trip for you! Watch the sky change colors as it reflects off the water all while you are in the middle of lake paddling your Stand Up Paddleboard.


Wondering how you are going to spend your Friday evening? Like Sunsets and Paddling? This is the trip for you! Watch the sky change colors as it reflectsoff the water all while you are in the middle of lake paddling your Stand Up Paddleboard. 


Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) combines elements of surfing and canoeing to create a fun way to play on the water. Join us as we explore the Eno River! We’ll spend the first part of the day teaching you the basics of paddling a SUP, and then the rest of the time will be spent paddling and enjoying the sunshine. 


Celebrate the week's end with a hike along the beautiful Eno River. Take a break, relax, and dip your toes in the refreshing water. After the hike, enjoy a delicious barbecued dinner.


Join Outdoor Adventures on National Public Lands Day and National Day of Service to participate in trailbuilding at Falls Lake. 


Head to the beach to learn how to surf with Outdoor Adventures! The beginning of the day will start with a 1.5-hour surf lesson with a surf instructor, then you will be set free to catch some waves and hang ten. Enjoy the sand, sun, and sea!

Join Outdoor Adventures for a lovely Fall backpacking trip. Enjoy the view of alpine-like peaks rising 5,000 feet above sea level and hope to catch a glimpse of wild ponies in the beautiful meadows. Intro to Backpacking Workshop will be offered before the course, but is not required to attend.

Spend Fall Break on the beautiful and scenic Virginia Creeper Trail. The Virginia Creeper Trail is a 34.3 mile rail to trail that meanders through the Virginia Mountains. Spend two days biking the trail and take in the spectacular views and the 47 trestle bridges. Must know how to ride a bike to attend.


If you love excitement, challenge, and adventure, this is the trip for you! Take advantage of the warm weather and crisp whitewater rapids as we venture to the Haw River for a day of fun and thrill. All experience levels are welcome, and participants must attend one Kayak Skills Workshop prior to the trip. 


On this rock climbing trip, you will have the opportunity to learn a multitude of new skills and apply them in an outdoor setting. Join us as we teach you the basics of outdoor climbing! Registration includes transportation, equipment, instruction, and lunch. Participants are encouraged to take a free Belay Class at the Duke Climbing Wall prior to the trip.


Outdoor Adventures Trip Policies

  • No experience is necessary to participate in Outdoor Adventure trips; we design our trips for any level of abilities from beginners to experts. Previous swimming experience is recommended for water trips such as canoeing and standup paddleboarding but is required for whitewater kayaking.
  • All participants must attend a mandatory pre-trip meeting (when applicable). For more technical trips, skills clinics may be required prior to the trip, for no additional charge.
  • All equipment will be provided for you; personal equipment may be used if approved by the trip leader.
  • Transportation will be provided for you unless stated otherwise.
  • Food is provided on all day and overnight trips, any allergies/dietary restrictions can be accommodated and should be communicated with the trip leader.
  • Alcohol, tobacco, and drug use are prohibited for the duration of the trip. Participants who violate these rules are subject to removal from the trip and transportation back to Duke will be at the participant’s expense.

Trip Cancellation Policy

Duke Outdoor Adventures reserves the right to cancel a trip or clinic due to inclement weather, natural disasters, or extenuating circumstances. In the event a trip must be canceled, a full trip refund will be provided.


  • A refund will be given if the participant cancels 10 BUSINESS DAYS prior to the trip date. Cancellations for extended trips must happen 15 BUSINESS DAYS prior to the trip date. Cancellations that occur after the cancellation window will receive NO REFUND.
  • Selling or giving your spot on a trip if you cannot attend is not permitted. In addition, Outdoor Adventures does not issue credits or refunds for trips not attended.
  • Outdoor Adventures reserves the rights to not issue a refund at the discretion of the program administrators.  

Personal Evacuation Policy

In the event, the participant no longer wants to continue on the trip for personal reasons the cost and organization of transportation home will be the responsibility of the participant and no refund will be given. The participant must also stay on the trip until the Trip Leader decides that it is a safe and appropriate time to leave the trip.
