Trips & Workshops: The outdoor trips and workshops program offers a wide variety of land and water-based activities for the backcountry novice, the avid explorer, and everyone in between.

Trip Registration: To get more information or to register for Outdoor Adventures trips please come in person to the Climbing Wall in Wilson Recreation Center. Full trip registration fee is due at the time of registration. Payments accepted include cash, check, credit or FLEX.

Upcoming Trips

2/23/2019 to 2/24/2019

Join us for an overnight backpacking experience in the Birkhead Mountain Wilderness - a beautiful area with vistas, creeks, boulders, and wildlife. Enjoy the unique wildlife and scenery on a 12-mile loop trail.


On this rock climbing trip, you will have the opportunity to learn a multitude of new skills and apply them in an outdoor setting. Participants are encouraged to take a free Belay Class at the Duke Climbing Wall prior to the trip.

3/10/2019 to 3/16/2019

Start off the week backpacking on Cumberland Island National Seashore. Cumberland Island is known for wilderness beaches, pristine maritime forests, wild horses, and historic sites. Then, head to Congaree National Park and be amazed by the largest intact expanse of old growth bottomland hardwood forest in the Southeast.

3/10/2019 to 3/16/2019

Join Outdoor Adventures as they explore 3 National Parks in the Western United States. Enjoy the unique and beautiful landscape, sleeping under the stars, and desert flora and fauna.

Participants are responsible for their own flights and must arrive at the Las Vegas airport by Sunday, March 10th at 3pm. Departures from Las Vegas on Saturday, March 16th.


This trip will allow you to build your rock climbing skills by heading outdoors! We will build on our weekly women’s climbing power hour and continue to build up your rock climbing community! Join us as we teach you the basics of outdoor climbing and more!

Participants are encourage to take a free Belay Class at the Duke Climbing Wall prior to the trip.


Wondering how you are going to spend your Friday evening? Like Sunsets and Paddling? This is the trip for you! Watch the sky change colors as it reflects off the water all while you are in the middle of lake paddling your Stand Up Paddleboard.


The US National Whitewater Center has more than just whitewater to offer. Spend the day choosing your own adventure! Start the day with whitewater rafting, then choose from a variety of activities including rock climbing, bouldering, ziplines, ropes courses, jumps, and stand up paddleboarding.


Have some experience climbing in the gym and want to put your skills to work outdoors? Join Outdoor Adventures on a more advanced rock climbing adventure where we will spend a full day working on outdoor climbing skills. You must be belay certified and climb at least at a 5.8 level. A free Lead Climbing Workshop is included prior to the trip.

Outdoor Adventures Trip Policies

  • No experience is necessary to participate in Outdoor Adventure trips; we design our trips for any level of abilities from beginners to experts. Previous swimming experience is recommended for water trips such as canoeing and standup paddleboarding but is required for whitewater kayaking.
  • All participants must attend a mandatory pre-trip meeting (when applicable). For more technical trips, skills clinics may be required prior to the trip, for no additional charge.
  • All equipment will be provided for you; personal equipment may be used if approved by the trip leader.
  • Transportation will be provided for you unless stated otherwise.
  • Food is provided on all day and overnight trips, any allergies/dietary restrictions can be accommodated and should be communicated with the trip leader.
  • Alcohol, tobacco, and drug use are prohibited for the duration of the trip. Participants who violate these rules are subject to removal from the trip and transportation back to Duke will be at the participant’s expense.

Trip Cancellation Policy

Duke Outdoor Adventures reserves the right to cancel a trip or clinic due to inclement weather, natural disasters, or extenuating circumstances. In the event a trip must be canceled, a full trip refund will be provided.


  • A refund will be given if the participant cancels 10 BUSINESS DAYS prior to the trip date. Cancellations for extended trips must happen 15 BUSINESS DAYS prior to the trip date. Cancellations that occur after the cancellation window will receive NO REFUND.
  • Selling or giving your spot on a trip if you cannot attend is not permitted. In addition, Outdoor Adventures does not issue credits or refunds for trips not attended.
  • Outdoor Adventures reserves the rights to not issue a refund at the discretion of the program administrators.  

Personal Evacuation Policy

In the event, the participant no longer wants to continue on the trip for personal reasons the cost and organization of transportation home will be the responsibility of the participant and no refund will be given. The participant must also stay on the trip until the Trip Leader decides that it is a safe and appropriate time to leave the trip.
