Trips & Workshops: The outdoor trips and workshops program offers a wide variety of land and water-based activities for the backcountry novice, the avid explorer, and everyone in between.

Trip Registration: To get more information or to register for Outdoor Adventures trips please come in person to the Climbing Wall in Wilson Recreation Center. Full trip registration fee is due at the time of registration. Payments accepted include cash, check or FLEX.

Upcoming Trips


Join Outdoor Adventures in the morning on National Public Lands Day and National Day of Service to participate in trailbuilding at Falls Lake. Then, spend the afternoon relaxing on the lake with Stand Up Paddle Boards and Canoes! Registration includes transportation, instruction, equipment, and lunch. 


Head to the beach to learn how to surf with Outdoor Adventures! The beginning of the day will start with a 1.5-hour surf lesson with a surf instructor, then you will be set free to catch some waves and hang ten. Enjoy the sand, sun, and sea! Registration includes transportation, instruction, equipment, and lunch.

Join Outdoor Adventures for a lovely Fall backpacking trip. Enjoy the view of alpine-like peaks rising 5,000 feet above sea level and hope to catch a glimpse of wild ponies in the beautiful meadows. Intro to Backpacking Workshop will be offered before the course, but is not required to attend. Registration includes transportation, meals, equipment, and instruction.

Start off Fall break by canoeing 2.5 miles out to Bear Island to camp for two nights. While on the island enjoy beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean, long walks on the beach, and the variety of wildlife. Then head over to the Croatan National Forest to camp and canoe through the wetlands. Registration includes transportation, equipment, meals, instruction, and camping.

Learn to fly at the Outer Banks just like the Wright Brothers did! You will start off the day with ground school then head to the sand dunes where you get to go on 5 flights. Registration includes instruction, equipment, meals, camping, and transportation.


On this rock climbing trip, you will have the opportunity to learn a multitude of new skills and apply them in an outdoor setting. Join us as we teach you the basics of outdoor climbing, lead climbing, building anchors, and more! Registration includes transportation, equipment, instruction, and lunch. Also included is a free Belay Skills Workshop or Intro to Climbing Technique and Movement at the Duke Climbing Wall prior to the trip!


If you love excitement, challenge, and adventure, this is the trip for you! Take advantage of the warm weather and crisp whitewater rapids as we venture to the Haw River for a day of fun and thrill. All experience levels are welcome, and participants must attend one Kayak Skills Workshop prior to the trip. Registration includes transportation, equipment, lunch, and instruction.

Get ready to explore the beautiful Eno River State Park right here in Durham! Take in the Fall colors, babbling creeks, the rushing river, and wildlife as you backpack through the park.  You will feel accomplished when you arrive at camp carrying everything you need for the night. Intro to Backpacking Workshop will be offered before the trip but is not a requirement. Registration includes transportation, equipment, meals, and basic instruction. 


Interested in learning the art of outdoor bouldering? Join us as we head to Grayson Highlands or Moore's Wall to spend the day on the rock! With multiple climbing locations to choose from for all experience levels, both locations are excellent spots to get started with the sport or challenge your current skills. Registration includes transportation, equipment, instruction, and lunch.


The Birkhead Mountain Wilderness is a beautiful area with vistas, creeks, boulders, and wildlife. Enjoy the beauty of the trail on a 12-mile loop trail. Registration includes transportation, equipment, instruction, and meals.


What to Expect

  • No experience is necessary to participate in Outdoor Adventure trips, we design our trips for any level of abilities from beginners to experts. Previous swimming experience is recommended for water trips such as canoeing and standup paddleboarding, but is required for whitewater kayaking.
  • All participants must attend a mandatory pre-trip meeting (when applicable). For more technical trips, skills clinics may be required prior to the trip, for no additional charge.
  • All equipment will be provided for you; personal equipment may be used if approved by the  trip leader.
  • Transportation will be provided for you, unless stated otherwise.
  • Food is provided on all day and overnight trips, any allergies/dietary restrictions can be accommodated and should be communicated with the trip leader.
  • Alcohol, tobacco, and drug use are prohibited for the duration of the trip. Participants who violate these rules are subject to removal from the trip and transportation back to Duke will be at the participant’s expense.

Trip Cancellation Policies

Outdoor Programs reserves the right to cancel a program due to inclement weather, natural disasters, or extenuating circumstances. In the event a trip must be cancelled, a full trip refund will be provided.


A refund may be given if the following conditions are met:

  • DAY TRIP: Cancellation happens 5 business days or more before pre-trip meeting date.
  • OVERNIGHT TRIP: Cancellation happens 10 business days or more before pre-trip meeting.


  • The participant’s empty spot is filled by another paid participant, prior to the pre-trip meeting.

Outdoor Adventures reserves the rights to not issue a refund at the discretion of program administrators.
