Trips & Workshops: The outdoor trips and workshops program offers a wide variety of land and water-based activities for the backcountry novice, the avid explorer, and everyone in between.

Trip Registration: To get more information or to register for Outdoor Adventures trips please come in person to the Climbing Wall in Wilson Recreation Center. Full trip registration fee is due at the time of registration. Payments accepted include cash, check, credit or FLEX.

2/03/2018 to 2/04/2018

Join Outdoor Adventures for a fun-filled weekend of skiing! Hit the slopes on Saturday and ski all day: lessons, lift tickets, and rentals are included! Spend the night on site at the Winterplace ski resort and relax before heading back to campus! Registration includes instruction if needed, transportation, lift tickets, rentals, breakfast and lunch on the day of the trip (dinner not included), and lodging.


Want to learn the basics of mountain biking or build up your skills? Hit the trails with us as we go over the basics of the sport and get some experience riding at Lake Crabtree County Park or the US National Whitewater Center. Each location is home to extensive singletrack loops through preserved woodlands and along waterways with trails ranging from beginning to advanced. Registration includes transportation, all equipment, instruction, and lunch.


Bundle up to get out in the crisp winter air and join Outdoor Adventures for a hike at Eno River State Park. Join us while we hike and take in the breathtaking surroundings of the area with various trails that run alongside a stream. Registration includes transportation and lunch.


This trip will allow you to build your rock climbing skills by heading outdoors! We will build on our weekly women’s climbing power hour and continue to build up your rock climbing community! Join us as we teach you the basics of outdoor climbing and more! Registration includes transportation, equipment, instruction, and lunch. Also included is a free Belay Skills Workshop at the Duke Climbing Wall prior to the trip! Must be belayed certified to attend.

3/11/2018 to 3/17/2018

Hiking in two National Parks, Rock Climbing, Mountain Biking, and Paddling on the River are all activities that you will be participating in during the trip. Enjoy the unique and beautiful landscape, sleeping under the stars, and desert flora and fauna. Registration includes transportation from Salt Lake City, equipment, meals, and instruction. Participants are responsible for their own flights and must arrive at the Salt Lake City airport by Saturday, March 11th at 4pm. Departures from Salt Lake City on Saturday, March 17th

3/11/2018 to 3/17/2018

The Foothills Trail meanders through the southeast mountains of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Enjoy a week on the trail sleeping under the stars and exploring the mountains with beautiful vistas, several cascading waterfalls, and unique flora and fauna. Registration includes transportation, equipment, meals, and instruction.


On this rock climbing trip, you will have the opportunity to learn a multitude of new skills and apply them in an outdoor setting. Registration includes transportation, equipment, instruction, and lunch. Also included is a free Belay Skills Workshop or Intro to Climbing Technique and Movement at the Duke Climbing Wall prior to the trip! Must be belayed certified to attend.


With miles of trails adjacent to the Cape Fear River and varying terrain, Raven Rock State Park provides the perfect place for a day excursion! Join us while we hike, relax, and take in the breathtaking surroundings of the area. Registration includes transportation and lunch.


The Neuse River is the perfect location to enjoy a fun and relaxing day in canoes. Join Outdoor Adventures as we drift down the river alongside beautiful scenery and unique wildlife! Registration includes transportation, all equipment, instruction, and lunch.


 The US National Whitewater Center has more than just whitewater to offer. Spend the day choosing your own adventure! Start the day with whitewater rafting, then choose from a variety of activities including rock climbing, bouldering, ziplines, ropes courses, jumps, and SUP! Registration includes transportation, all equipment, instruction, an all-activity pass, and lunch.


What to Expect

  • No experience is necessary to participate in Outdoor Adventure trips, we design our trips for any level of abilities from beginners to experts. Previous swimming experience is recommended for water trips such as canoeing and standup paddleboarding, but is required for whitewater kayaking.
  • All participants must attend a mandatory pre-trip meeting (when applicable). For more technical trips, skills clinics may be required prior to the trip, for no additional charge.
  • All equipment will be provided for you; personal equipment may be used if approved by the  trip leader.
  • Transportation will be provided for you, unless stated otherwise.
  • Food is provided on all day and overnight trips, any allergies/dietary restrictions can be accommodated and should be communicated with the trip leader.
  • Alcohol, tobacco, and drug use are prohibited for the duration of the trip. Participants who violate these rules are subject to removal from the trip and transportation back to Duke will be at the participant’s expense.

Trip Cancellation Policies

Outdoor Programs reserves the right to cancel a program due to inclement weather, natural disasters, or extenuating circumstances. In the event a trip must be cancelled, a full trip refund will be provided.


A refund may be given if the following conditions are met:

  • DAY TRIP: Cancellation happens 5 business days or more before pre-trip meeting date.
  • OVERNIGHT TRIP: Cancellation happens 10 business days or more before pre-trip meeting.


  • The participant’s empty spot is filled by another paid participant, prior to the pre-trip meeting.

Outdoor Adventures reserves the rights to not issue a refund at the discretion of program administrators.
