Outdoor Adventures will help plan your next outing with Personal Trip Plans. You can select from several hiking, paddling, backpacking, or camping trip plans within the Triangle Area. Keep an eye out because more will be released shortly including biking and more hiking! Pair a Personal Outdoor Adventure Trip with an Equipment Rental and you will be set for a trip full of adventure! 

Pricing Structure

Duke Recreation and Physical Education Members and Digital Members have access to all available Trip Plans for free. Non-members can pay a fee to access activity-specific Trip Plans. Pricing is based on activity, not location.

Trip Plans Include
  • Location Address and GPS coordinates  
  • Location information such as parking, trailhead, boat ramps, visitors centers, campgrounds and/or facilities 
  • Recommended things to do ranging from beginning to advanced 
  • An activity-specific packing list 
  • A risk management plan outlining possible risks and safety measures to minimize those risks 
  • Rules and Regulations of the Area 
  • Emergency information for the nearest hospital

Trip Types

Free Durham Historic Site Trip Plans

These plans are open to anyone, member or non-member! Click the link to download that location's trip plan.

  • Bennett Place The location of the largest surrender of the American Civil War
  • Duke HomesteadEncompasses the historic home, farm, and tobacco factory buildings of Washington Duke and his family
  • Historic Stagville Includes the remnants of one of the largest plantations in North Carolina and is dedicated to teaching about the lives and work of enslaved people on the plantation
Hiking 

The Durham area has several beautiful and unique hiking areas. The diverse trail system will take you meandering through the woods, to the top of mountains, and strolling near streams. Available trip plan locations include: 

  • Eno River State Park – Fews Ford, Cabesland, Pump House, and Cole Mill 
  • Duke Forest – Gate C, Gate 12, Gate 21, and the Al Buehler Trail 
  • City of Durham Parks – West Point on the Eno 
  • Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area 
Paddling 

A great way to beat the heat is to get out paddling on one of Durham’s picturesque lakes or waterways. Whether you are Stand Up Paddleboarding, Canoeing, or Kayaking, you can enjoy the water from dawn till dusk. Available trip plan locations include: 

  • Falls Lake – Beaverdam, Rolling View, & Hickory Hill 
  • Jordan Lake – Ebenezer Church, New Hope Overlook, & Seaforth 
  • Eno River – Eno River Boat Ramp 
Overnight – Car Camping 

Unplug and unwind with a night under the stars at one of the Durham area’s beautiful campgrounds. The campgrounds are located on picturesque lakes so you can spend your nights roasting marshmallows and your days swimming, paddling, or hiking. Available trip plan locations include: 

  • Falls Lake – Holly Point, Rolling View, & Shinleaf  
  • Jordan Lake – Crosswinds, New Hope Overlook, Parkers Creek & Poplar Point 
Overnight – Backpacking  

The Durham area offers great locations for the beginner or well-seasoned backpackers, whether you are looking to hike 1 mile or 6 miles. Take the opportunity to step away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and carry everything you need in your backpack. Available trip plan locations include:
